Welcome to our Small Group Videos for our Fall Study in Discipleship! Here were the discussion questions posted for this Week: Week 4 - Raise Not all of us are parents, but we all have experience being Raised. What did you learn about discipleship growing up? What was good and helpful about the faith you learned from your family? What was less than helpful about the faith you learned from your family? Read Ephesians 6:4 What are some things the culture around us is ‘bringing their children up’ in? What intentional practices can parents and other adults use to help point children toward the Lord? John mentioned the tension of whether the church or the family is the primary ‘discipler’. What do you think the responsibilities of both church and family should be? What are the marks of a family that is raising their children in the Lord beyond church attendance? John said, “When we don’t disciple our children, it frustrates them.” How have you seen children’s need for structure and boundaries? How have you seen children’s need for grace when those boundaries are broken? We’ve talked a lot about parenting, but not everyone is a parent. How can our group value those without children, spouses, empty nesters, and everything in between when we talk on this subject? Are there ways to invite those without families into this aspect of family life in the church? John ends the video by asking us to spend time praying together, for families and our struggles, for encouragement and to bond together in these struggles. Spend some time in prayer for those things.

What do you think Jesus means when he tells his disciples they are the salt of the earth? What are some positive (or negative) ways that Christians ‘stand out’ in the culture around us? John highlights the importance of confessing our sins and struggles to each other. Read James 5:16 Why is it important to confess our sins and struggles to one another? How can we as a church family improve to be a place that people feel they can safely confess sins and seek prayer? Read Romans 12:17-21. Why is treating an enemy kindly important to a Christian? Can you think of a time that someone responded to your harshness with kindness? How did it impact you? Read Matthew 5:43-48 Why does Jesus call us to love our enemies? How does loving our enemies reflect the character of our heavenly Father? How does it reflect our identity in Christ? Spend some time as a group praying for ways that we can ‘stand out’ from the world around us for Christ, and ways that we might love those who would treat us harshly.

Why were they your favorite? Did their teaching stick with you better than other teachers? There are so many ways of making disciples. Have you had an experience with a certain method of disciple making that was unhelpful or discouraging? What’s been an impactful method of discipleship that has helped your walk with Christ? Our words for today are Right Here. How does a Christian balance the tension of the call to make disciples Right Here, as well as help the gospel spread to the ‘ends of the earth’ as Jesus said in Acts 1:8? How does understanding the Great Commission in the framework of ‘As you go’ change how we think about disciple making in the here and now? What opportunities might this open our eyes to us that God has for us? Who are one or two people that God has in your life “Right Here” who need to see the beauty, truth, and teaching of Christ? What would it look like to live a “Right Here” mindset in your next interaction with them? Spend some time in prayer today with your group for those specific people we just mentioned.

What was a high point of the week for you? What was a low point of the week for you? Today’s word is Recenter. As a group, read Luke 5:12-16. What happens in the passage before we’re told that Jesus “often withdrew to lonely places and prayed”? What do you notice about the pace and timeline of this passage, including Luke 5:1-11? Why do you think Jesus, despite having people constantly seeking Him, sought time to withdraw and pray? Jesus regularly created space to be alone with the Father. Have you ever intentionally practiced silence and solitude? What was that experience like? Does the idea of silence and solitude sound helpful, difficult, uncomfortable, or refreshing to you? Why? What tends to make it difficult for you to slow down and be alone with God? Prayer, Silence, and Solitude are great practices, but they aren’t the only way a disciple recenters on Christ. What are some practices, habits, or moments that help you refocus your attention on God? Nick said, “One of the scariest things we can do, is trying to do the work of God, apart from God.” Have you ever found yourself doing something for God while feeling disconnected from Him? What was that like? Is it possible to do good things for God apart from Him? What’s more important for a disciple- the work of God, or His Presence with us? What is one practical step you can take this week to create space to be with God?
